Another Victory Against Non-Compliant Products

10 Dec 2024 1:36 PM | Anonymous

IOPSA is thrilled to celebrate a significant victory in the fight against non-compliant products in South Africa. The recent raid by the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Glenesk, Johannesburg, is another crucial step towards safeguarding consumers and ensuring compliance with industry regulations.

On October 15, 2024, nearly 100 illegal refurbished domestic geysers valued at R400,000 were confiscated. These substandard products posed severe risks to consumers, including potential explosions, electric shocks, water contamination, and higher energy costs. This decisive action highlights the importance of vigilance and cooperation in addressing such threats.

A Collective Effort

This success would not have been possible without the unwavering commitment and support of various stakeholders:

  • IOPSA Members: Your vigilance in reporting illegal geyser sales has been instrumental in escalating the issue to the NRCS. Your dedication to protecting the industry and its consumers is commendable.
  • Plumbing Africa: Thank you for continuously raising awareness about non-compliant products through insightful articles. Your efforts play a significant role in educating the public and industry professionals.
  • IOPSA Regional Chairpersons and Committees: Your consistent advocacy during monthly meetings has been vital in keeping this issue at the forefront of industry discussions.
  • NRCS and SAPS: We applaud the NRCS for their decisive actions and SAPS for their indispensable role in these successful raids. Your commitment to consumer safety and compliance inspires us all.
  • The Public: Your reports of illegal sales have been a critical part of this campaign. Please continue to report non-compliant products to ensure safer practices across the industry.

Supporting the Fight Against Non-Compliance

IOPSA fully supports the NRCS’s ongoing efforts to remove dangerous goods from the market. We are proud of the regulators' pledge and their dedication to eradicating non-compliant products. This milestone emphasizes the collective strength of the industry, regulators, and consumers working together to uphold safety and standards.

Let us remain united in this fight. Together, we can protect consumers, uphold the integrity of the plumbing industry, and ensure a safer future for all South Africans.

If you suspect the sale of non-compliant products, please report them anonymously to recon@iopsa.org. Let’s continue making a difference, one report at a time!
